5 Signs your hormones are out of balance and what you can do about it.
Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body and control essential functions within the body such as your appetite, metabolism, sleep cycle and stress response. It’s normal to have fluctuations in hormone levels throughout the day but when these levels become consistently out of balance that’s when issues start to arise and we need to take some steps to bring these back into balance.
Here are some common signs to look out for which may indicate you have a hormonal imbalance..
Feeling tired all the time – This is a common issue and there are many ways of improving your energy levels however if you have already taken steps to improve your energy and you are still struggling with fatigue, especially if you wake up feeling tired and unrefreshed then this may be a sign of imbalance. Adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues are common in today’s fast paced lifestyles and fatigue can be a symptom of this.
Constantly hungry, sugar cravings – Another common issue with people! This can be due to several hormone imbalances, the main one being insulin. Insulin is responsible for maintain the levels of sugar within your bloodstream so if you have a high sugar or refined carbohydrate diet then you will be producing a lot of insulin to control this. As sugar gives you a temporary “feel good” state, you will crave more sugar to get that same feeling.
Struggle to lose weight – If you have a healthy diet but can’t seem to lose weight no matter what you eat then this could be due to your hormones. Your thyroid controls your metabolism so if the thyroid hormones are out of balance then you could have trouble losing weight. Stress can also have an effect on this, if you are constantly stressed out this takes it’s toll on the body and the stress hormone cortisol sends a message to the body to “hold on” to fat so it can use it for energy, making it more difficult to lose weight.
Brain fog – The hormones oestrogen and progesterone are important for brain health and imbalances of these hormones can lead to forgetfulness, poor memory and concentration and brain fog.
PMS symptoms every month – If you’re on an emotional rollercoaster every month then it’s time to get your hormones under control. Symptoms such as mood swings, feeling tearful, difficulty concentration and low energy can be a sign that you aren’t detoxifying your hormones efficiently.
So it’s all very well blaming your hormones for everything, but what can you do about it? There are several ways in which you can improve your hormonal health and ensure that you are detoxifying these efficiently. Here are some of my top tips..
Include healthy fats in your diet – these are foods such as oily fish, flaxseed oil, nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil. Coconut oil etc. Good fats are required for hormone production and are also essential for brain health, try to include a couple of portions a day.
Support detoxification – Your hormones are detoxified by the liver and excreted in bowel movements so if this process isn’t working effectively then you can end up reabsorbing hormones, causing imbalances. Ensure you are supporting this function by including fibre rich foods such as vegetables, wholegrains, oats to promote a healthy bowel. Support the liver by including water to help flush out toxins and a variety of vegetables to support detoxification.
Reduce sugar/refined foods – Reducing your sugar intake will lead to a steadier production of insulin and cortisol which will help manage cravings and mood swings.
Stress management – Reducing stress will help to reduce the amount of cortisol that is produced and stop the adrenals from being overworked. This can be things such as meditation, deep breathing, taking a relaxing bath, watching something funny, being outside in nature.
